Amazon Firestick is comfortably the most popular IPTV device in the UK. It's widely available, inexpensive compared to alternatives, and straightforward to configure once you know the steps. This guide walks through the full setup process — from an out-of-the-box Firestick to a working IPTV installation — and covers the most common problems people run into along the way.

This guide covers the steps for setting up our UK IPTV service on any Firestick model — the full process, with troubleshooting for the most common issues.

What you'll need before starting

Step 1 — Enable apps from unknown sources

By default, Firestick only permits apps from Amazon's own store. To install IPTV player apps, you need to enable sideloading first. From the Firestick home screen, go to Settings → My Fire TV → Developer Options. Turn on Apps from Unknown Sources. On recent firmware versions this may appear as Install Unknown Apps with a toggle per individual app.

Step 2 — Install Downloader from the Amazon App Store

Downloader is a free, legitimate app published by AFTVnews and available in Amazon's store. Search for it by name and install it. This app lets you enter a URL and download APK files directly onto your Firestick — it's the standard method for loading apps that aren't in Amazon's catalogue.

Step 3 — Download your IPTV player app

Open Downloader and enter the APK download URL for your chosen player. Two options work well on Firestick:

When you purchase a ProTV UK plan, your welcome message includes the download URL for the recommended player alongside your credentials.

!
After downloading: Firestick will prompt you to install the APK. Tap Install, then Done (not Open). Return to the home screen and find the installed app in your app list — it may be under "Your Apps and Channels."

Step 4 — Add your credentials

Open TiviMate or IPTV Smarters. When prompted, select Xtream Codes API as your playlist type and enter the Server URL, Username, and Password from your provider's welcome message. The app connects and loads your channel list automatically — usually within 30 seconds.

Step 5 — Wait for EPG to populate

All channels appear immediately. The electronic programme guide takes 3–5 minutes to fully load on first setup. After that it updates automatically in the background each day.

Troubleshooting common Firestick IPTV problems

Buffering during live sport

The most common cause is Wi-Fi congestion. If you're on the 2.4GHz band, switch to 5GHz — or better, use a wired ethernet adapter (the Amazon Ethernet Adapter for Fire TV costs about £10 and makes a significant difference). Also check no other devices are streaming simultaneously on the same connection.

Channel not loading

Press back, wait 10 seconds, then reopen the channel. This clears the buffer and usually resolves a stuck stream. If the issue persists on one specific channel, contact your provider — occasionally a channel source changes and credentials need updating.

EPG not showing

In TiviMate: go to Settings → EPG → Update EPG. Give it 5 minutes. If it still doesn't populate, your provider's EPG URL may need refreshing — contact support.

App crashes on startup

Clear the app's cache: Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications → [your app] → Clear Cache. If that doesn't resolve it, uninstall and reinstall.
